Why study in the USA?

MIT campus

The United States hosts the world's largest international student population — over 1 million students from 200+ countries. Home to 9 of the world's top 10 universities (QS), a US degree carries unmatched global prestige, particularly in STEM, business, and research.

US universities offer unparalleled flexibility: choose your major, switch programmes, access need-based financial aid, and customise your academic journey like nowhere else. Research funding and campus facilities are in a league of their own.

Post-graduation, STEM OPT gives graduates 3 years to work in the US before transitioning to an H-1B, making it one of the best career launchpads globally for Indian engineers, scientists, and business professionals.

Student Visa

F-1 Student visa process

The F-1 is the most common US student visa. Here's how Indian students apply through the US Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata.

01
Receive I-20 from university
Once accepted, the university issues a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility). This document is required to apply for the F-1 visa and register with SEVIS.
02
Pay SEVIS Fee (I-901)
Pay the $350 SEVIS fee online at fmjfee.com. Keep the receipt — you'll need it for your visa interview.
03
Complete DS-160 Online Application
Fill out the DS-160 form online at ceac.state.gov. Pay the visa application fee ($185). Schedule your interview at the nearest US Consulate.
04
Attend Visa Interview
Bring: passport, I-20, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, financial proof, offer letter, and academic transcripts. Show strong ties to India and clear study intent.
05

STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of the standard 12-month OPT available to graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths fields. Combined, STEM graduates can work in the US for 3 years on F-1 status, giving them time to find an employer willing to sponsor an H-1B visa.

Many universities waive tuition and provide stipends for PhD students. At the undergrad level, need-based aid from top schools (MIT, Yale, Princeton) can cover 70–100% of costs.
