Ancient universities, ultra-affordable tuition, and unmatched culture
Italy hosts the world's oldest university — the University of Bologna, founded in 1088. Public Italian universities charge just €900–4,000 per year in tuition for international students, making Italy one of Europe's most affordable destinations. Italy excels in design (Politecnico di Milano is one of Europe's top design schools), architecture, fashion, art history, and engineering. With over 600 English-taught master's programs and a growing startup scene in Milan and Rome, Italy offers more than heritage — it's a modern, competitive EU destination.

Immigration
Italian Student Visa Process
1
Pre-enrollment via Universitaly Portal
Register on the Universitaly portal (universitaly.it) and submit your pre-enrollment application to your chosen university. This step is required before applying for an Italian student visa. Some universities have separate direct admission portals — check your university's website.
2
Obtain Declaration of Value (DoV)
Apply for a Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore) from the Italian Embassy or Consulate in India. This document certifies that your Indian qualifications are equivalent to Italian standards. Processing takes 8–12 weeks — start early. Fee is approximately ₹2,500–4,000.
3
Apply for Type D Study Visa
Apply at the Italian Consulate (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata). Documents: offer letter, pre-enrollment confirmation, DoV, bank statements (€5,000+ per year), accommodation proof, travel insurance, and passport. Processing takes 3–6 weeks. Visa fee: €50.
4
Arrive and Register (Permesso di Soggiorno)
Within 8 days of arriving in Italy, apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit for study) at the post office (Poste Italiane) — submit the kit form available there. You'll get an appointment at the local Questura police station. This permit allows you to stay and study for the academic year.
5
Post-Study: Job Seeker or Work Permit
After graduation, Italy offers a 1-year post-study job search visa for graduates from Italian universities. Once you secure a job, your employer applies for an EU Blue Card or skilled work permit. Long-term residency (permesso CE) after 5 years of legal Italian residence — a pathway to EU permanent residence.

Best Cities to Study In
Milan — Design & finance capital, Politecnico & Bocconi
Yes — Italian public universities base tuition fees on your family's income (ISEE system). For international students, fees are typically €900–4,000/year at most public universities. DSU regional bursaries can reduce this further or even provide a full waiver plus a cash stipend. Private universities like Bocconi and Luiss charge full rates of €12,000–16,000/year.
The Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore) is a document issued by the Italian Embassy/Consulate in India certifying the equivalence of your Indian academic qualifications. It's required for both the visa and university enrollment. Apply at the nearest Italian Consulate (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) with your original certificates and translations. Allow 8–12 weeks. Cost is approximately ₹3,000–5,000.
Not for coursework — but daily life (supermarkets, government offices, landlords, local transport) in cities like Bologna, Turin, and Florence is predominantly Italian. Milan and Rome have more English-speaking environments. Basic Italian (A2–B1) significantly improves your quality of life. Free Italian language courses are offered by most universities through their language centres.
Yes — degrees from Italian public universities are internationally recognised and respected globally. Politecnico di Milano, Bologna, and Sapienza are particularly well-regarded in engineering, architecture, and science. For professional degrees (medicine, law) recognition may require additional licensing exams in India. For most academic and corporate careers, an Italian degree from a top university is fully accepted worldwide.
